How did we end up going to Mantis and Moon? Lizette and I tied the knot on 16 December 2024, but life being life, we hadn’t carved out time for a honeymoon yet. With Valentine’s Day and her birthday (21 February) around the corner, I decided it was time for a little adventure — a romantic escape.
After scrolling through deals, we landed on a gem from Daddy’s Deals — a stay at Mantis and Moon Backpackers Lodge. Paradise tucked away near Umzumbe Beach on the South Coast. Bonus? They accept Payflex, so we paid off our trip in four easy instalments. Winning!
Getting There | All Aboard Margate Coaches

Right now we don’t own a car ( #walking vibes), so we booked a ride with Margate Coach — R200 per person, one way. It was a quick, comfy trip, and they dropped us right at Mantis and Moon’s entrance. Honestly, five stars for Margate Coach — friendly driver, smooth ride, and bang on time. We highly recommend them if you’re planning a coastal getaway without the hassle of driving!
Welcome to the Jungle (Cue George of the Jungle Music)

Arriving at Mantis and Moon felt like stepping into a scene from George of the Jungle. Think wooden cabins peeking out from thick tropical trees, with birds chirping and the soft rustle of leaves. We checked in at 11:40 am — way before the standard 2 pm check-in. Still, the staff welcomed us with warm smiles and no fuss.
Our home for the night? The Angel Hut — a cosy wooden en suite cabin nestled among the trees. It had a rustic charm that felt both wild and romantic. We dropped off our bags and set off to explore the jungle-like grounds.
Umzumbe Beach | A Rain-Soaked Stroll

With Umzumbe Beach (a proud Blue Flag beach) just a stone’s throw away, we decided to take a walk. It’s a stunning stretch of sand, perfect for long romantic strolls… except we got caught in the rain. Not just a drizzle — full-blown monsoon vibes. Soaked but laughing, we headed back to Mantis and Moon, the rain adding to the jungle magic.
Dining at Moonlight Café
Hunger kicked in, and we found ourselves at the Moonlight Café, run by the ever-smiling Kim. She went above and beyond, whipping up a bespoke lunch platter for us on Wednesday — fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented.

Thursday morning’s breakfast was just as memorable. I went for the Meaty Breakfast — crispy bacon, perfectly cooked eggs, and golden toast. Lizette chose the Omelette with bacon, mushroom, and cheese — and when I say cheesy, I mean next-level, gooey, stretchy, cheesy goodness. The chef’s care and creativity shone through every bite.
Rainy Night, Warm Jacuzzi
That evening, as the rain continued its jungle symphony, Lizette and I slipped into the outdoor jacuzzi. Imagine warm water swirling around you, rain pounding on the wooden deck, and the surrounding trees swaying in the stormy wind. It was pure magic — the kind of moment that feels like a scene from a romantic movie.
Jungle Vibes and New Friends

One of the unexpected joys of Mantis and Moon was the mix of people we met.
- A guy from Pennsylvania who visits South Africa every year, despite battling severe back arthritis. He even has a personal driver from Coffee Bay — and that driver gave us an impromptu tongue drum performance during breakfast, adding the perfect soundtrack to our jungle morning.
- An older hippie couple from Germany who shared their travel stories and love for the South Coast.
- Two girls from the Netherlands, eager to explore every hidden gem the area had to offer.
Everyone we met, from the guests to the staff, added to the laid-back, international vibe of Mantis and Moon.

Until Next Time, Jungle Paradise

Our short stay at Mantis and Moon may have been rain-soaked, but it was unforgettable. The blend of nature, romance, and incredible people made it feel like a proper adventure.
We left with soggy shoes, full hearts, and a firm plan to return. Next time, hopefully, with a bit more sunshine!
So, if you’re craving a break from city life and want to wake up to the sound of birds and rain tapping on a wooden cabin roof, book your stay at Mantis and Moon Backpackers Lodge — and grab a ride with Margate Coach if you need transport.
Trust me, the jungle is calling.
