Hey there, fellow freelancers! Happy World Mental Health Day 2024! Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough airtime—our mental health as freelancers.
Sure, we get to work from anywhere, avoid the daily commute, and sip coffee in our PJs. But let’s be real—freelance life comes with its own set of challenges. In fact, mental health for freelancers often takes a backseat when we’re focused on getting that next client or finishing a deadline at 3 a.m.
I’ve been through it myself, and this Mental Health Day 2024, I’m sharing some tips that have helped me prioritize my well-being. Trust me, it’s just as important as hitting that next deadline.
1. Acknowledge the Emotional Rollercoaster

One thing I’ve learned as a freelancer is that the highs can be sky-high, but the lows can hit you hard. One week, you’re riding a wave of new projects, feeling on top of the world, and the next week, you’re wondering when the next invoice will come through. Feast-or-famine is a real thing! Moreover, it can seriously impact mental life for freelancers.
Question–what is the first step in managing the mental strain of freelancing? The answer is to Acknowledge the Challenges.
It’s okay to admit that freelancing can be stressful, lonely, and, at times, overwhelming. When you recognize these struggles, you allow yourself the space to actively work on managing them.
2. Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful
You can’t run a successful freelance business on coffee and adrenaline alone—believe me, I’ve tried! One thing I realized early on is how my eating and drinking habits directly impact my mental health and energy levels.

Here’s what helped me:
- Stay hydrated: I keep a bottle of water next to my desk. Set alarms to remind you to drink throughout the day.
- Mindful eating: Instead of reaching for fast snacks or skipping meals, I plan simple, nutritious meals that don’t take much time. Think smoothies, salads, or even a good protein bar if I’m in a pinch. 43 Fabulous Foods by Lizette Balsdon has some great recipes!
- Limit caffeine: This one’s hard, I know. But too much caffeine amps up anxiety. I’ve started balancing my coffee intake with herbal teas. They keep me calm, but still alert. Experiment with different flavors.
If you’re not fueling your body with the right nutrients, it’s harder to focus, be productive, and maintain a positive mental state.

3. Set Boundaries | You Don’t Have to Be Always “On”

Boundaries—this is a big one, and it’s something I’ve struggled with. When you work from home, it’s easy to let the lines between work and personal life blur. Remember, burnout is real! Without clear boundaries, it’s just a matter of time before you hit a wall.
Here’s what I do:
- Create a daily schedule: I start work at a set time each day and, more importantly, end at a set time too. It helps to signal to my brain when it’s “work time” and when it’s time to relax.
- Take regular breaks: Even a 5-minute break every hour can refresh your mind. I step outside, stretch, or make a cup of tea to reset.
- Learn to say no: One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t have to take every project that comes your way. Saying no to certain clients or projects gives you the space to focus on what truly matters.

4. Break Free from Isolation | Build Your Support System
Freelancing can get lonely. There’s no colleague to chat with during breaks, and sometimes the only human interaction I get in a day is with the barista. Isolation can creep in. It is really easy to feel like you’re tackling everything alone.
But you don’t have to. Here’s how you can combat that loneliness on World Mental Health Day:
- Join online communities: There are so many great online groups where freelancers support each other. Find a Facebook group or an Upwork channel. These spaces are perfect for sharing struggles, wins, and advice.
- Find a mentor: Having someone to guide you through the freelance journey can be a game-changer. A mentor can offer:

- Perspective,
- and sometimes just a listening ear when you need it most.
- Co-working spaces: If you miss the buzz of an office, try working in a co-working space. Even a local café can help break up the isolation.
Remember, you’re not alone in this. There’s a whole community of freelancers out there, just like you, figuring things out.

5. Look for Professional Help When Needed
Let’s normalize this: finding help is not a weakness. Whether it’s through:
- a counselor,
- therapist,
- or even a life coach.
- Sometimes you need that professional support to work through the mental and emotional challenges of freelancing.

If you’re feeling stuck, anxious, or overwhelmed, there’s no shame in reaching out. Think of it as an investment in your well-being. In fact, it’s like you invest in a business tool.
